Hello,

I was thinking of ways I could replace my Spirit R/t grill. Since they are ns1, and a used one seems to be as illusive as the Lockness monster I had an idea. The chrome grills and emblems are still available new. Together they are about $85 shipped to my house. If spray painted, will the paint hold onto the chrome? Do I need to rough it up or take the chrome completely off? Sanding the fins without breaking them seems like it may be impossible. Anyone have suggestions or imput? Any paint guys out there? Anyone ever try to paint chrome. Being on the front of the car, the wind will really beat it up.
All imput and ideas are appreciated. Thanks Ryan.

I would scuff it up with a scotchbrite pad and spray it with adhedion promoter. They sell a spraybomb product called Bulldog that works well.

Well all I can say is good luck. Even if you scuff chrome it still wont stick for long. The only real way to get paint to stick would be to remove the chrome. Not sure if there is a plastic safe acid bath or not. But painting over it will last a little while but it will peel back off. I tried it when I did a monochrome paint job on my 600 it worked well until I got one rock chip then it was all over.

If the grill is plastic, you can just scrape off the chrome layer.

Its not chrome in the normal sense we associate with metal parts- with plastic, especially trim parts, just take a razor blade to it. Once you get a chip off its easy, it all just peals off the part.

I've done this before with factory grills and its pretty easy.

If its metal underneith the chrome, then I don't know what to tell you.
