Hi. I want to put a nice cd/cassette/am/fm later model head unit in my '85 Charger. I have an Infinity cassette player from another dodge in the car now but it doesn't play cd's. So I've been searching ebay and found a few like what I want.

CD player only:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...2180138&rd=1,1

CD & Cassette:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...1052177&rd=1,1

Not sure which of the two I want but I don't really listen to cassettes that often so I'm leaning towards the CD only version. Suggestions? Also, these auctions say the head unit will work/fit in a 1987 Shelby Charger with no mention of the earlier Chargers. Is there a difference in the wiring or fitment from 1985 to 1987?

Will I need a wiring harness like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...8326131&rd=1,1

I found some speakers that will fit:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...1875647&rd=1,1

Are these ok quality judging by the specs? They mention the speakers will fit rear doors or rack but the Charger obviously doesn't have rear doors and what they mean by rack I'm thinking they're talking about how most cars have speakers at head level behind the rear seat. So any idea if these would fit the rear 'side panels' on each side of the seat going by dimensions?

Infinity oem Jeep amplifier:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3163977&rd=1,1

Could this amp work along with either of the two head units above and could it power a single 10" enclosed subwoofer. If not, any recommendations for an inexpensive amp ($200 or less)?

I'm going to have a local audio shop install it all and buy/build a sub & box from them. Any recommendations for a good sub?

Thanks

I tried to put a CD/Cassette in my 82 Rampage but the new units are deeper than our cars so I resold it. Come to find out that there is a metal brace behind the radio hole that can be removed. I'm 99% sure that if the bracket were taken out there would be no problem putting a newer OEM unit in your car.

Do you know if that bracket is important, like holding up the dash or not?

Just seems to tie things together, If I hadn't sold the radio before I'd found out hoe easy the bracket is to remove, I'd have a stock looking radio in there now.

I have the cassette / CD model in two of my daytonas. they were both out of 99 Sebrings... they fit in with a bit of modification to mine and plugged right in.

no.. not like the that.. the wiring is straight plug and play... same connectors... i originally had one of these in an 89 Shelby... and it was a TIGHT fit, the slot that the unit slid into was a bit small for the unit.. but it would work then that car got totalled and it was moved to a 90 Shelby and it slid in there fine... the other one is my 92 R/T right now and it fits too.. what needed to be changed is the connector tabs... they do not match up from the Avenger / Sebrings to the older cars.

Do these head units have the mounting tabs on the top right side and bottom left corner.

This one here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Infin...QQcmdZViewItem

...is nice but the right tab is on the top not the side. I haven't yet pulled mine out to see where the tabs are. Thanks

The vast majority of mopar radio use the mounting system like the radio in you first post. Yours will most likely have it as well. I did the radio search a few years ago too and found most radios that had the odd mounting ears were out of jeeps.

I don't know about your charger but most mopars the cover over the radio is just held on with clips and you can just pop it off and see what ear set up your has.

I have 2 of the radios in the first link of your first post. They are nice but that model has issues with playing burned discs. It will play them fine some times and later will not play the same disc you just played. They also have issues with the lasers and the fm going out. If they say it played fine but has been sitting I would assume it has an issue they don't what to tell you about. There was a guy on ebay fixing the radios. I think it was 55 for FM and 125 for the laser. If you send him more then one radio to fix or more then one issue with a radio he cuts the price some.

Another option is what I did to my R/T I found a radio AM/FM/cassette with CD controls with a 6 disc changer. It came out of a 98 model year car. It popped right in and has not had an issue with a burned disc yet. This set up cost no more then buying a broke single disc radio and getting it fixed.

As far as speakers. I just get a nice set of aftermarket ones. Just don't get crazy with getting a high watt set. My mini I replaced 4 of the 6 with a nice set of JBL's and it sounds great. My R/T I used factory Infinity in the dash some free rockford fosgate speaker in the doors (these need to come out they sound great but they should have an amp on them) and a free set of cerwin vega's in the rear.
