What will I need and what techniques should I use to paint the vinyl part of the center console?

What color are you painting it? Auto parts stores will offer basic colors-white, red, black, tan... If you have another color in mind most body shop supply shops can custom mix a vinyl paint and put in a rattle can.

There are many different grays. You may have to get it custom mixed. Check out your local parts store for vinyl paint. I've done some door panels gray that were close enough to factory the dealer didn't even notice when I traded the car in...

Clean it with a wax/adhesve remover with a link free rag, let it dry then do it again with a white link free rag to make sure all dirt and grime(sp?) has been removed. Go over the piece(s) with a tack rag if will add in picking up little pieces of dirt and leave a nice sticky like film for the primer to stick to. Prime the pieces after you tack them to min. the chance of trash collecting back onto the piece. 1st layer of prime should be thin. You don't need to worry about the 1st layer covering the whole part in primer just trying to leave more area to stick to. After first layer has dried go over it with the tack rag again then prime the whole piece. Once the primer is dry inspect for trash, fisheye, runs, etc anything that will make the final finish have imperfections then grab the the link free rag dry wipe the surface then lay down the final color! Should turn out nice looking and most importantly CLEAN!

Thanks! That's perfect. So, I don't need to use any coating after paint. Also, do I just need to get a standard gray color? Is the primer special or just standard paint primer?

Thanks again,
Clint

Use a good quality primer and color. What is the final color going to be?

A flat clear would be ideal to have as it will add alittle more protection to the base color. i havnt looked to see if its available in a rattle can or not but probably wouldn't cost much for a body shop to do it if you want to go with a clear coat. Primer for the most part is primer, but you want to start and end the project with quality in mind. A quality paint will do better in the end as for results, color life, paint hardening, etc. So take the primer just as serious as the color

Colorcoat is a brand that makes a lot of colors that match our factory colors for the various body styles. They are specifically for plastics and vinyls.

Also, Simple Green works REALLY well for cleaning and prepping the surfaces of interior parts prior to painting.

As mentioned above, be sure to primer before spraying the paint. Apply in thin layers and build up layer after layer. Don't apply real thick layers or else one wrong bumping of the painted surface will cause an eyesore of a knick.
