I have this reddish-brown, nasty, sticky, gooey mess dripping onto my carpet near the back left side of my center stack. I am having trouble cleaning it up, so on my lunch break today I tried to see where it's coming from. I pulled out the radio and the a/c controls and the back corners of each of those are covered with it as well. I didn't have a light with me to really see back up in there, but it must be coming from fairly high up in the dash or vent assembly. Does anyone know what that stuff is??? It doesn't smell, but it is wrecking my interior and ticking me off. Carb cleaner will thin it, but not really clean it off that well. I might try 3M adhesive remover and/or paint thinner when I get home. I need to get to the source of it to keep more from dripping down once I get it cleaned up.

I have no idea what it is. I have seen what you are talking about though. I was pulling the auto temp control from an '87 'baron and everything was covered in it. I ended up not using most of the parts. The funk was coming from a module that sat in the place for the center speaker. Though I have no clue what that module is.

Thanks. At least I know where to look now. I need to pop the top off the dash for new speakers anyway. I guess this means my headlights might quit working soon if all that compound melts out, right? Fun, fun, fun.

I have that crap coming out from the dash on my 87 Shelby Z. It is nasty stuff--very hard to get off. The lights on mine work fine--does this mean I am doomed? Can you put more of that 'stuff' in there or get something else to replace it? Thanks. djd.

Try some of the electronics potting compounds (polyurethane I believe). Electronics hobby stores, Digikey, etc... may carry it.
