ok so i searched around the site looking for a thread on making a short shifter out of the stock 89 a555 shifter and was wondering how people are doing it, i have seen pictures in thread about other things that look like the stock shifter but are shorter, i could do it but was wondering how you guys are doing it and still keeping the reverse lockout still working

Ain't it lotashelbys? or lotsashelbys? I think it's the 1st one. It's not lotsofshelbys, though. Just do it like the sticky says & look at it to figure out what to do differently for the lockout. It's not too hard.

My buddy and myself built one...it isn't hard really. The hardest part was the reverse lock out, but that's because my buddy that was helping me was intent on doing it his way. It worked, just took a few trial and errors before it was right!(and I thank him VERY much for his hard work and efforts!!) We used Jackson's images quite a bit for refference.

I WILL say that raising the base 3/4" is about all the higher you really can or would want to go! Anything mroe than that and the shifter base *might* hit the center console, it WILL be a royal pain to get the shift lock-out retainer pin in, and the throw will be right around "too-short"! LOL

No, but they had a REALLY crappy crossover set-up. It is similar in design to the DSM's. I don't remember if you can bolt in a later 4-plane shifter and make it work or not. You *may* have to swap the cross over cable as well to make it work, but I'm not 100% on that.

What is the "cross over cable"???

I've been trying the use one cable from my a525 and one from the a555 since 1 i got with it didn't have enough throw. Not sure why throw would be different...I think the guy i bought it from on here kinda stiffed me a lil and sent me wrong cables.

I can get the cables to mount up to my old shifter but the throw was never good enough to even give me confidence to go and try to drive it...I've lubed the cables so they're not sticking inside(slide'n like butter).

Hummm...I have the tranny out now maybe i should do an out of car mock up to make sure the cables i have are swinging the shift fork the right distance.

Thanks for your help guys

Take all i can get..

Whos got the bad ass lancers on here?...i know there is t3 guru's(jackson)

What I call the "cross over" is the cable that changes the shift plane from 1-2 to 2-3 to 5 to R. Basically it's the cable that controls the side-to-side action(or if you are messing on teht tranny part of the thing it would be from front to back on the shift housing).
