I replaced my headliner and i had no interior resteration experience before then. Just remove enough of the plastics to pull the headliner board out. Go to a local interior shop and buy some headliner material(less than 20$). For glue, just brush some elmers on the board. Dont use the aerosol stuff from autozone or other places, it doesnt hold. Let it dry then cut out the holes for dome light mirrors etc. Then slide it back in the car.

I went to a fabric store ( minnisota fabics, jo- ann ect. I now it look wierd for a guy in those stores) & they have just about every color that match up with the interiors + it's cheeper than the auto part stores. Pull the headliner out , pull the old stuff off & get a very fine piece of sandpaper to get the dried glue off. Then use the 3-m glue ( good stuff) spray the cardboard & fabric & let sit to get tacky. then get someone to help u set it straight, start at the top (windshield side) & start laying it down. Leave a 1 1/2 overlap from the edge. Use your hand to smooth the fabric side to side until u get to the end. don't forget to tuck the edges when u are done. Look at the headliner fabric before tearoff & u will see why. let sit outof the car for about a day. If warm & sunny let sit outside it'll speed up drying time. Trim out the holes, reinstall & enjoy.

If you're dealing with a sedan and not a hatchback, I suggest you take it to a professional. You'll find it's impossible to get the headliner out of the car to refurbish it without damaging the backing board unless you remove the windshield. In a hatchback car you can simply pull it out of the hatch.
