Re: 3.3 upgrades

I think I might look into the neon tranny, I would think it would have a bit more aftermarket support simply because it's a neon.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

There is a 3 spd that bolts to the 2.4 and it is the same 3spd that was bolted to the 2.2, 2.5, and 3.0 with different bellhousing patterns. It can be built to be extremely strong but very few people have any experience doing it. The information is out there on the forums if you really dig.

In my opinion the easiest way to make a 3.3 quicker is to modify the transmission. Thats not to say there are no options to improve the 3.3.. just that you can make the van go much quicker with a completely stock motor by modifying the transmission.

The 604 has multiple ring and pinion and transfer gear sets which you can mix and match to get much lower gearing. The stock van will have a ~3.61:1 diff ratio. You can drop that to 4.28:1 to the best of my knowledge. You can also use a smaller diameter, higher stall torque converter from another application to add a lot of punch at launch and part throttle.

The downside is unless you have mechanic friends who are comfortable swapping out these parts, you would have to pay a trans shop a pretty large amount of money to get this done. So it really depends on who you know..

Bunch'o K-cars.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

The 4.28 is a north south Pacifica, but 4.10 or 3.90 are options. Free flowing intake and exhaust will help any engine. 58mm tb form a 3.8 is an option also. Exactly what are you looking for in the way of power? A mid 90's 3.8 with a 2001 up 3.8 cam and free flowing exhaust would be a huge gain in torque.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

Not sure what you mean by north/south, the Pacifica is transverse and uses a 'regular' 604 in the FWD versions before they went to the 6spd.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

Hmmm, 3.8 with a 6 speed? Might be time to consider a return to vans.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

My 91 caravan has a 3.3 bored and stroked to 3.8, it has a mild cam, the intake is ported and smoothed with a 60mm tb. Heads are ported and polished. Mopar tuned pcm installed. The tranny is a carefully built a604 with kevlar clutch packs, high-stall torque converter, and a shift kit.

For the exhaust i deleted the cat and ran 2 1/2 pipes to a muffler and out the back.

With the rear seats out i can run high 14's all day long.

The last the the van ran a legit 1/4 mile was in 2006. Its was brought to Milan drag strip along with a 91 turbo Shadow. The best run was in the ballpark of 14.58, the Shadow was running 12.3's.

The engine module had been re-flashed with different timing curves, and fuel mappings. My dad had it done at his work in Auburn Hills years ago when second gen vans were still desirable.

I cant provide proof atm, I'll just record a 0-90mph and post later.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

Excellent, i'll await that video.

I may be VERY interested in that computer calibration you've got. There is another guy in Michigan up there who modifies computers for the rest of us and im sure he would be interested to see what was done to your van computer. I have a 90-91 3.8 car as well that could use some computer mods.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

Here's me screwing around on my way home from work tonight.

Full interior, spare, and a half tank of gas with the stock air box on. weighing in at 4300lbs.

She'll do a 15 right now.

My 14.6 run was with no interior, and no intake, and had 70,000 less miles. I think shes still doing fine

Not exactly 0-90 but its something.

Re: 3.3 upgrades

Well, it's hard to gauge from such short pulls but it does seems noticeably quicker than a stock 3.8 van and it certainly sounds better.

Can you tell me more about the cam?

It was the stock 3.3 cam, that had metal welded onto it, the lift is .0020in taller that stock. The lobes were ground to be a little sharper.

You can really feel it when you get up in rpms. You also get a lumpy idle on a cold start.

Sorry i cant provide exact numbers, this was an undocumented build

Ok, cool. Well, if you get a chance to take a vid of a longer pull, 0-60 or whatever, post it up for us!

Re: 3.3 upgrades

Still faster than my Shadow..

Most recent ET for my v6 mini.

Still surprised I haven't blown the trans up after 100k of torture.

Burnouts for days

Re: 3.3 upgrades

Cheezit: is your van a long wheelbase or are 2nd gen vans heavier than 1st gens for some reason? 4300lbs seems heavy. Mine weighs about 3200 according to the scale at the scrap yard and that's with me, tools, subwoofer etc...
