HELP! Mix & match TD engs

Hey guys got an emergency here... I apparently killed a piston today in my daily driver 89 TD voyager (auto trans). havnt taken apart yet. It has recent rebuilt head (stock valve job). Someone just offered me an 88 Daytona IIRC 2.5 turbo eng (all apart), ran well when taken apart....My question is what can i mix & match parts wise to take advantage of his eng? will my puter play nice with any or all of this ? THX to ALL the great community! P.S. If any TD guys around central FL (im in Tampa) has parts or is willing to take on this job i would appreciate it!

Tim

Re: HELP! Mix & match TD engs

piston 30 years later who knows what either one has in it now.

make sure its a 88 TURBO and a 2.5 motor. has the factory drain in the back or check the vin.
we can verify the engine based on the vin number on the block.

Then verify it is a real common block.
no fuel pump block off plate.

if it is a 88 TURBO 2.5 common block then you can mix and match all you want.

Re: HELP! Mix & match TD engs

He said the long block is untouched long block original 2.5 turbo to the 88 Daytona IIRC. Again i have 89 voyager all original to my van 2.5 (145 K miles) turbo auto drivetrain except i recently did valve job on original head about 10 K miles ago

Re: HELP! Mix & match TD engs

The turbo in 1988 was a 2.2 only... In 1989 the 2.5 Turbo was available this is the starting year of the common block (CB)
The 2.5 in 88 was an EFI not to mention was odd duck as it had a tall deck. This has several odd parts
DDG- Turbo shortblock
Engines:2.2L/2.5L Block Differences

Re: HELP! Mix & match TD engs

Okay I have to ask, what is a Daytona IIRC? In 1988 US production, they made a base Daytona, Daytona Pacifica, Shelby Z, CS Trim. Are you looking at casting stamp on back of block or what to identify it as a 88? They didn't make a 2.5 turbo until 89 model year, however they did cast early 89 CB blocks in mid to late 1988. Can he send you pics of block, turbo, and intake manifold and you post up so you we can help you confirm exactly what it is he is offering you?

Re: HELP! Mix & match TD engs

ya.,. thats kinda why i mentioned not knowing what might be in that daytona.

need to find out if it is a common block .
and a turbo block. and we can check the vins.

no such thing as a 88 2.5 turbo daytona.

but there is a chance someone dropped in a 2.5 turbo in it.

who knows what you find in these cars 30 years later

That's hilarious! I thought OP was trying to tell us it was a model like TII or IROC Daytona.
My bad. Carry on... (hehe).

Chrysler Daytona IIRC..Rare yellow Canadian model inspired by the Minneapolis Moline Coupe.

What Todd says is accurate.

Thanks

Re: HELP! Mix & match TD engs

Just spoke to Jegs to research parts buy... their puter sez there was a late year 2.5 turbo put in daytona, hes asking for car VIN which may not be available. But you guys disagree there wasnt a 2.5 turbo used in 88? ill try to get the eng owner to get pics & Engine # if there is one. he sez its a 2.5 Turbo original to that 88 daytona. Assuming your right what probs will i have with matching 88 2.2 Turbo bottom end to my rebuilt 89 Voyager 2.5 Turbo head & van? Hers a few general pics of 88 eng https://www.turbododge.com/forums/me...onaengine2.jpg PIC #2 https://www.turbododge.com/forums/me...aytonaeng1.jpg

In the day, Mopar did lots of odd things, My July 87 built Sundance (my DD, I bought new) was a regular looking EFI car with only tilt steering package with 14" Rims etc. But for some reason the engine was a 2.2 T1 with 520 but no trace of Turbo emblem or stickers. The VSS was for 15" rims so the speedo was off for 20+ years. I am surprised that I was never stopped only my brother when he took it for a spin. The paint is a different that the PR5 that it should be, They may have mixed a bit of PR4 and PR5 together.
What I am saying, who really knows for sure, especially 30+ years later.
Here is the 88 fiche so you can have a look.

Yes it does mentions the 2.5 but as an EFI. If you check the 2.5 section you will see that it contains only EFI parts. the 2.2 section shows the turbo manifold/lines etc. If you check the model chart you will see the 2.5 is EFI only but in the real world this may be different.

If you check the HEP for the 2.5 it only list the EFI version
