Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

What is the point at which people blow up turbo 1 motors with too much boost? I've only found guesses, and if it's only guesses that exist, I'll find the limit. Goal is 300whp on my 87 csx.

Re: Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

I would be more than happy with 200 HP in my Turbo1 intercooled Rampage. You need to remember we do not have the toughest parts on T1's. You haave only 10 mm headbolts, light bottom end, may or may not have T1 log manifold. I would thinks 300HP is not realistic given the base you have to work from. Lots of broken parts and blown headgaskets. You would need as well to change logic modules, put in more fuel, likely add an intercooler and beef up transmission. I am not saying it cannot be done but at what cost?

I'd go as far as doing a headgasket with arp fasteners throughout the motor. I will be doing lots of supporting mods, I'm ready for that. Someone says I have 11mm headbolts and a combo engine. Lol I love it.

Re: Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

lol
bought 85 turismo for 55 hun in '88

by the same time in 89 I realized I'd bought THE worst used car EVER
EVERYTHING , everything died that first year

so , 90' - turbo conversion ,log motor, full shelby suspension package

had it for six years
went through 6 fresh short blocks
TOTAL investment .. abut $17 K CDN funds , 90-95

everything I used except internal engine and trans parts and brake parts was already pre used

the MP logic module and 12 pounds of boost ment it never got beat by a 5.0 mustang , z28 , trans am or corvette .. ever

basically dead even with the 5.0's + my "usual jump for green advantage " - so always in front up to about 95-100

my buddy wrecked his grand national before I had the chance to try him..
(LOL) .. which just sounds like an excuse now as I think of it 30 years later

Re: Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

oh .. forgot
add to list

SMOKED

1 .. metro toronto police cruiser .. caprice classic that had 60kph rolling start vs my standing start
me.... first across 4 lane intersection right as light turned green just as the caprice entered my right side blind spot

3 am one summer morning
I went , for a ride , not even playing around
drove past my high school and down the long hill to stop at the lights in the valley below

sitting there waiting for the light I notice , REALLY notice a pair of headlights comming down the hill sooo fast they look like they're falling straight down outta the sky...

hummm...

hummmmmmm .. I've been hit by a drunk before like this ...
ain't gonna ever happen twice
!!

kick throttle , check mirror and lights
light's begin to change over...nice .. that's handy right now..

check the mirror .. yep it' IS in the same lane behind me and it's STILL coming

check light
it just goes to red so 3 seconds to green
hit throttle
hit throttle again
hit throttle , hold down side step clutch

ha ha
seeee ya

ya I see it swerve to go past on the right at the exact moment I leave

so .. at the far side of the intersection I lift
I don't need to go any faster .. and I'm really not much over the 60kph posted limit either..
this as the white fender with the red and blue stripe pulls alongside my door

ah ha
I know what THAT is ..lol

the conversation that followed was fun ..
me standing beside the cop in his car ... as maybe it should be

ya know .. hello officer who are you and just WHAT are YOU upto this evening "sir"...

he and his slack jaw rookie partner were kinda stumped after I described "seeing him coming" while squatting beside his car and leaning on the door
I used my fingertips to represent headlights FALLING from the sky
at kinda an uncomfortable , three stooges poke in the eyes kind of distance ...
followed my my reply to "so what , lookin for hookers?"

to which I replied , no that's your job and I wouldn't wanna get in trouble with your union for doin' YOUR job..

so , how many times do ya need to get beat before you stop trying ? is the moral there

hint thinkin you can't be beat is loss number one...

Re: Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

those three second light change over throttle taps need to go to about 3500 both times

first tap should show , some boost
second tap should show full boost
third hit I can't say as I never looked - kinda busy...

Re: Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

Get a 8 valve cylinder head to flow enough air, 300whp will be easy to make.

This seems unusual, either you where at WOT 24/7, or something is wrong. Going through that many motors just seems off, where you just blowing bearings? If so the issue is fixable unless something was moving under power causing bearing failure. Like crank walk, oiling issues, bearing quality issues, overall rebuild quality. What's the deal?

Re: Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

just killing rod bearings that was all

replacement bearings seem to be softer - I asked here and on TM about hard rod bearings and learned the o-e ones were harder than the replacements

and yeah I REALLY beat it that hard
so far I'm the only one here to mention killing a 555 trans because I broke one of the internal shift fork to actuator rod bolts...sooo I'm pretty damned aggressive ...so to say

Re: Turbo 1 engine hardware limit

No one else does either!!

Its not the boost or HP, its the tune and combination.

Maintaining a good AFR is the secret to success!!

Forged pistons are the best investment as they are more tolerant of errors.

Manual boost is also high on my list, gradually increase 1 lb at a time and observe.

Learn how to control boost and you're on your way.

Thanks
Randy
