50trim turbocharger auto vs stick

Ok so I mostly love My turbo in the daytona wish there was less lag

OK so now I'm doing the mini I am open to options

I'm considering getting the same turbo because the auto cars run in the higher rpm band blahas blah

One of the turbos I'm considering is a 50 trim on a proper cover with a .63 snail and 3" sw and if possible a "quick spool option" to help

I would LOVE a ball bearing turbo to help it spool faster but $$$$$$$

I just picked up a t2 with a "super 60" wheel in a machined stock cover but I think that's going to restrict me. But I can put it on for now and go from there. Not in a rush

Let's talk I'm open to options

90 Daytona Shelby Vnt Flash Red With Leather. 2.2.20 over wisco pistons, stage 2 head, stage 5 cal, 3" sw and dp, t3/4 stage 2 .63 50 trim on a tu header, koni's and ebach all around, 2 piece intake with the 3 bar setup, 568 hybrid (3.50)with a obx and a tu klevar clutch, body and paint done by me same as the rest

Re: 50trim turbocharger auto vs stick

Depends on your goals. What are your goals? What are your supporting mods? A true s-60 with .63 housing and 3" or better SW will have great driveability with a 2.5. IMO 2.5's should have came with a 60 trim Garrett turbo to begin with. What turbine is in your Daytona 50 trim turbo? Assuming tune is correct, that effects spool more than anything else. The compressor wheel, housing, and exhaust housing A/R have a lesser effect on spool than the turbine size. I personally feel if you think your current 50 trim in your Daytona has too much lag, your gonna find a 50 trim combined with a 2.5 will have pretty much the same issue. Yes you might be running a bit more RPM, and with a larger displacement 2.5, it should spool up a 50 trim turbo easier (than a 2.2), IMO, your powerband is gonna be fairly narrow. 2.5's have a smaller powerband than a 2.2, and installing a 50 trim turbo that is slow to spool and you'll be making the powerband even smaller.
I've driven a couple auto 50 trim stage 3 turbos (even in lighter cars) and the vehicles had poor driveability at anything less than WOT. Felt REALLY lazy on the street.

Re: 50trim turbocharger auto vs stick

I'd stick with something smaller than a 50 trim for lots of street duty. T3 Super 60, super 70 (to4b S wheel), or to4E 46 trim. I'd also stay with standard Garrett or Turbonetics F1-49 turbine. All of those with .63 exhaust housing and to4b or better compressor housing, and driveability will be good, and still offer very good performance.
FM used to sell an Enforcer II 46 trim with stage II wheel in a .48 (stock) housing for larger (heavier) vehicles. I've driven a couple G-bodies with that combo. Driveability was still pretty good, as was performance. For lighter vehicles (l-bodies) FM usually would recommend the stage II wheel combined with the .63 housing. That was of course when they were readily available.
The FWD 46 trim Turbonetics turbo with old FM compressor housing and .63 housing with std. F1-49 wheel is an excellent performer. Enough turbo to get a well prepped l-body into the 11's on not huge boost levels and still have great driveability on the street.
