Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555

I have an '86 GLHT with a T2 and an A555 trans. I removed the drivers side axle and the input to trans is 23 splines. I have not removed the passenger side axle yet. I am thinking that this drivers side axle is the stock axle for the '86 GLHT but I have no way of knowing for sure. Rockauto lists the '86 GLHT and the '87 Omni NA (with high output engine) are nearly identical. What to do? This is what the trans that is in the car looks like. A555, right?[Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555-a555-close-up.jpg

Yes, that's what I bought. The problem is the axle I pulled out of the trans is 23 spline. The 88-90 Omni automatic axles are 25 spline. No worky. I searched and researched the forums before I posted here. Confusing, yes? to me any way. I am wondering if whoever put this car together put 23 spline axles where 25 spline should be? Would it even be drivable that way? I had only driven the car 3 miles when I discovered there were serious issues to deal with.

Re: Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555

What were the serious issues driving with the 23 spline axles??

I forget the spline count but could check possibly tomorrow.

The 1986 axles will slip in a 555 but don't properly engage.

All cars except L bodys went to large spline axles for 1987.

L bodys kept small spline but Automatic only had large spline 1988-90

As Harry mentioned, 1988-90 Automatic only are the axles we all use.

Thanks
Randy

Thanks. Can you confirm by the pic that what I have is an A555, if so, why would it have 23 spline inputs? I did not notice any problems with the running gear, it seemed to shift OK and I did not hear any strange noises. The issues I had were that the distributor was installed wrong and they tried to make it run with an '86 MP turbo computer (it did not run well). They actually did some things right, including swapping the right wires to the AIS from the logic module. Thanks for the help, I am learning.

Um, if there was a trans tag on it, I am quite sure I wouldn't be wasting any ones time trying to figure out what axles to use in it.

Re: Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555

the pic you posted is a 520/555/523/568 simply by virtue of the rounded cast aluminum diff cover
523/568 would have a small bell crank lever midway along the shift selector mechanism box on top the trans

easy as pie to tell apart from the o-e 525 with it's FLAT stamped steel diff cover

Re: Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555

Here is the new 1988 Omni drivers side automatic axle and the one I pulled out of the trans. So apparently I need to use '86 up Omni manual cv axles, correct? So I am guessing the tranny is not a A555.

Re: Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555

1 525 small spline trans first with flat steel diff cover

2 520/555/523/568 large spline with round cast diff cover this particular one being a 523 or 568

note the different tag location from earlier 555 pic

Re: Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555

As mentioned, check your diff cover, located between the axle retainers.

Small spline 525 has a flat stamped steel cover.

Sure seems like you have the small spline unit.

Manual L body axles interchange from 1981-1990 EG: APWI CH8029

Originally GLH-T had an intermediate shaft assembly so both sides take the same axle.

Many ditch the int shaft and use the long 81-90 on the right side. EG: APWI CH8030

Examples are from Rock Auto.

Thanks
Randy

Re: Input on which axles to use for '86 GLHT w/turbo ll and A555

Buy axles for an 86 GLH Turbo. Itíll be the same as an NA Omni axle because no manufacturer is making a specific axle for FWD Mopars any more.
Try pulling the passenger side axle before you order. The axle on that side tends to get stuck in the jack shaft. If its stuck, you can order a longer NA axle.
