86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top

Last weekend I acquired an 86 Daytona Turbo Z W/ T Tops for 750.00 Dollars. Its in fairly good shape. Especially the undercarriage. It does have a dent in the front drivers side fender but I already have the replacement for it.
The engine looks to have about 170,000 + miles on it.From what I can tell by talking to previous owner Evil Cow the cars story starts at a small transmission shop where Brain found the car and purchased it for a bag of beads and a pack of lucky strikes. lol He cleaned the inside up replced broken out rear glass and traded Allen ( not sure what his TD name is) for a Spirit He had. After Allen got it running (replaced the two or more quarts of water with the proper amount of oil) and changed out the ruined leather for a nice set of cloth enthusiast seats and matching back seats he sold it to a friend and later converted it to an auto trans for him. That owner then sold it to a guy that had planed on running it at a local track but decided it wasn't what he wanted to do with it and put it up for sale. Which leaves it in my hands. Whats next in this storied life of this little Turbo Z you ask?
1) Bushings all the way around.
2)Freshen up engine. Figure bearings and seals.
3)Replace fender on front drivers side.

I will have pictures posted tomorrow.

You can tune a Tona but you cant tune a fish !

Its great when someone documents the history of a car. Its amazing what some of them have been through and are still around for us to restore.

Re: 86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top

Well here is the first installment of pictures. It raining up and down the east coast so I was limited on taking pictures today. The rain makes the old paint on car look better than it is.

Also today I ordered all the suspension bushings. If luck holds out I will start on the suspension and breaks this weekend.
Here is a break down of what I plan on doing to the car for now.

1st Suspension and breaks and finish installing new head light adjuster screws
2nd Pull engine and install new bearings and freeze plugs.
3rd Replace dented drivers side fender and try to adjust rear hatch and wing as to match canards that run down the sides.

During all this I will also need to find a weather stripping of sorts to run along edge of glass tops to work in place of the little cloth seal that ran around the frame edge.
Well that is it for now.

No problem.

Got my set last winter. Hoping to get my Daytona painted in the next couple of weeks so I can get it back together & install these seals myself...

It's mostly in primer, just touching up some issues this week, and hoping to spray color this weekend...

BTW, nice looking 86. I love my 89, but the first gen body style is still my favorite...

Re: 86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top

Ordered all the Poly bushings for car yesterday. So they should be here soon.
I also decided to take it for a drive to parents house tonight in the rain and noticed that both windshield wipers were not locked down to arms then the passenger side quit working all together . I snapped the locks in place on both wipers and then as I pulled back up at home the drivers side stopped working. LOL A simple thing to fix just kinda funny how it happened. Any ways a small issue in the scheme of things. Also noticed a small leak in T tops but nothing major and only in one spot on drivers side. Will look into that as well.
All in all still realkly pleased with the car as a whole.

Re: 86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top

Started installing bushings today and it went very well. I started with the rear.
I didn't get as many pictures as as I would of like due to things going so well that I didn't think about it most of the time . But I did get a few.
If you plan on doing this be sure to spray all nuts and bolts with some PB Blaster or something similar the night before you start. This will help you when trying to dissemble every thing.
Other than that follow the direction that comes with every bushing you buy from Poly Bushings.

panhard, axle or trailing arms, upper and lower spring seats, control arm bushings.

86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top-20161003_113028-1-.jpg As you can see in this pic and the following one. The spring seat bushings were shot.

86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top-20161003_153545-1-.jpg new spring seats in place.

86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top-20161003_175550-1-.jpg I used a drill and a small wire brush to clean up inside of busking housings. It worked great
86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top-20161003_153510-1-.jpg Trailing arm or axle arm bushings in place. But not tightened down yet. I jacked axle up to its normal a rest position before I tighten down on the bolts. Not sure if this is necessary but a friend recommended it so I did it.

After I finish rear suspension I took car for a ride and it was a world of difference. Cant wait to start on the front tomorrow.

Re: 86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top

well installed all the bushings plus some rear shock this week and got the car aligned.
86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top-20161005_130517-1-.jpg All the bushings and outer tie rod ends

86 Daytona Turbo Z T Top-20161007_172210-1-.jpg Car on fancy alignment machine at buddy's shop.
hes under there cussing cuz the PO installed chamber bolts way out . Like top of tire as far out from center as you can go. But its all good now!!!! Thanks Barry!
Now for some more small stuff. whipper bushing went out on both arms last week and repaired them and then last night the one that attaches both arms to the motor went bad.
the kit I got at auto store doesn't seem to have the motor bushings or maybe it does and I don't know what Im doing. Any help on this would be great. running drivers side whipper only right now.

Here is the kit you need. It has the correct pass-through bushing for the wiper motor:
