1986 Turbo Z: Whats involved going from digital to analog dash?

Seriously considering swapping the digital dash for a good, always works analog dash in my Turbo Z. I don't yet have a digital dash to compare to the digital but maybe someone can share their expertise.

Are the wiring connectors the same or do I need to get the connectors off the donor car also?
Is there a speedo cable involved that will need to be added to my car?
How about the cruise control?

I see from the parts book that the dash cluster bezel is not the same for digital and analog dash clusters

Any tips or experience shares would be appreciated.

Re: 1986 Turbo Z: Whats involved going from digital to analog dash?

the trim bezel for the digital dash has a shroud on the back of it that extends inword towards the top of the digital cluster
the 84-6 digital cluster having a flat plastic face with no lens

the analog cluster it;s self extends outward towards the trim bezel and does not need the shroud as the shroud is a part of the body shape of the analog cluster with an angled outward at the top , clear plastic lens

so the trim bezel changes..

now , the 87-9 stuff is different yet again

granted the trim bezel is flat without the shroud , but , it's flat for both style second generation clusters

but wait .. there's one more thing

the 87-9 trim bezel differs at the left side where the headlamp switch is

the two openings at the left side of the 87-9 cluster won't match up if swaped into an 86 .. without changing the black plactic headlamp switch surround plate
(it just clips on)

so a swap to a newer cluster needs the cluster , either / or and the trim bezel & headlamp switch surround

Re: 1986 Turbo Z: Whats involved going from digital to analog dash?

Thanks Johny, I would be going with an 85/86 style cluster. So except for the face-plate/bezel and having the correct analog cluster to match your headlight switch, is it a straight forward plug-n-play, remove digital dash and face-plate and install analog dash with appropriate analog face-plate?

Of course I realize I will need the connectors off the donor car and need to do some wiring...

Re: 1986 Turbo Z: Whats involved going from digital to analog dash?

ya still have to swap the pigtails for the cluster plugs

good news is the digital car is going to have a couple of wires you won't end up needing

the same ones you would have to hunt down if swapping a digital cluster into an analog car

no worries on those though , just tape em over as they're unneeded
