Speedometer questions

I have had this on my wife's Daytona way back.
The speedometer would like to stop giving readings.
Usually me hitting the dash would allow it to come back on.
Loose wire most likely...

Well, now my Daytona is having this.
Problem is, now I cannot get it to come back on.

What wire from under the hood and which wire under the dash should I check?

I am assuming a loose wire for this also.
Doubting the connector is loose or I would assume all the dash gauges would not work, not just speedo.

I could be wrong...

Please help!!!

Assuming your odometer also stopped would indicate an issue with the VSS and/or wiring to the cluster as opposed to it being an issue with the speedo itself.

First check for fault codes, see if a Code 15 is stored which would tell you that the engine controller has also lost the VSS signal.

What year is this Daytona?

Found out it is an 89 in one of your other threads.

Check for the fault code and post back.

Ok, it just says the battery was disconnected recently and that the speed sensor signal is lost.

I did reset the computer due to the new fuel pump I have.
So the battery reset is true.

I found the two fives was the end of the codes.

Two codes, and I am assuming the speed sensor is the problem and not the dash gauge.

Reason being, the computer is not getting the signal I assume.

Let me know if that sounds about right.

I need to locate the sensor which I hear is on the backside of the transmission. Is it behind and under or???

Probably an easy swap, just a wiring harness to take off and unscrew the sensor like an O2 sensor?

You are correct on the fault codes.
Code 55 is "end of message".

The VSS should be located in the R/S extension housing.
Be sure it is not a wiring/connector issue.

Mopar # for the All Electronic (No Cable) Speed Sensor is 5227897.
You can use that # to cross reference to the correct aftermarket part.

I would just add that banging on the dash could be an indication that the dash cluster, printed circuit board or tach itself have a cracked or loose solder joint, or faulty connection.

If you do have an active hard code attack that first as the speed sensor does fail often.
Iíve had multiple cars/ vans w/ faulty dash connections at the solder joints.
Almost every Masi TC Iíve picked up has had no odometer or intermittent tach, speedo or both.
The mid 80ís-early 90ís all share the same electrical architecture, so these problems are all pretty similar.
I believe the vibrations, age and road conditions all contribute to these failures.
So, keep those struts and shocks fresh,... and try to miss those dreaded pot holes!

I have a later model (92 GTC V6) which had related problems. Except mine has an electrical analogue speedometer/odometer. I found out that often the little strap connector behind the speedometer in the clusteroften needs cleaning, so I used electrical contact-cleaner spray for all the connectors en route to the transaxle. Yes, gently remove the instrument cluster. I'd say better to never slap it again, actually.

I bought a generic sensor here:

but, you can easily find the factory, OR typical aftermarket brands too.

In the transaxle extension, the sensor is clamped in with a 10mm-head machine screw.
Remove it and the electrical connector, and with a drain pan and clean rag handy, gently tap upwards on the rim of the sensor body.
Pull it upwards and out and staunch the AT fluid spillage. You need two hands to release the barbs holding the pinion gear which is transferred to the new sensor.

Some variation of this procedure should help your trouble-shooting.

And check the condition of the plastic pinion gear, after time the gears will actually wear away and can cause poor or no road speed generation

I am going to have my mechanic look at it. I was hoping it was an easy sway type sensor.
Most likely I am going to buy another speed sensor and have it installed.
If the speedo doesn't come to life... the dash or a wire going to it most likely will be the culprit.
Since I have almost a 30 year old car, I mind as well get it replaced while the mechanic will be chasing down the problem. One more new part I wont have to worry about for another hopefully 30 years...

I have a spare dash in my garage.
But the thing is, I had my wife's Daytona way back converted to digital dash.
The dash in the garage was also having the issue of the speedo going off and coming back on.
Not sure if I should have someone rebuild that dash and use this current one till the wife's old dash gets worked on.

Who repairs/ refurbs these dashboards?

The trip if I remember correct didn't work either.
Plus the tachometer was also in and out of conscience too.

Tach issue would be caused by cracked solder joints and/or poor connections at the tach drive module which is on the cluster circuit board above the tach.

Odometer not working is caused by broken drive gears in the speedo housing, common problem with all TD's.

Both are fairly easy fixes.

I am going to dust off that old dash and check the circuit board.

If it is not cracked, I will buy the gears and replace them.

I also want to get a new speed sensor too.

Mind as well freshen all these things up.

Last question, the trip on both gauge clusters don't work.
Will these gears fix that too or is it another thing altogether?

It came back on yesterday...

I drove my car yesterday and the speedometer magically came back on.

Today it also worked... but on one occasion it came on during driving, whereas when the car started up it was off.
But when it came on is when I pressed the gas down quickly to around 50% downward.
The injectors opened up quick and with that jolt the speedo came back on.

The fact that this came back on with a little jolt of the throttle makes me believe it is a loose wire or harness.

If I had a lift or something to get to that sensor...

I will still have to have the car looked at, but I am pretty sure something is loose.

My stereo speakers do the same thing, lol.
It is on, then off, then on... but it is probably speakers from the 80's and sounds like they are too.
