86 LM to 88 SMEC

I’m looking for some information from anyone who has done this. The car is a TBI 86 Aries wagon and the harness is from an 88 Shelby Z. I have done a few L body TBI to SMEC conversions but not a LM to SMEC but I’m confident in my work.

Can I just run the wires from the PM and run them up to the plug on the SMEC and add an ASD relay?

Is it possible to open the 86 engine harness up and add the necessary wires to the 60 pin plug, along with the 60 pin plug?

The last 88 TBI to TII harness I just opened the harness up and added/moved some wires around then repinned the turbo 60 pin connector. Is it possible to do something similar here?

I also have access to Shopkey and identifix for pin outs and diagrams I’m just looking for some direction at the moment as the car isn’t at my house yet.

Thanks all!

Re: 86 LM to 88 SMEC

is there an 88 turbo K car nearby?

it would have a plug and play engine compartment harness

88 turbo K car got smec but kept the bulkhead connector in the firewall
- so an 88 K car smec harness would plug right into your existing 86 50 way bulkhead connector

Re: 86 LM to 88 SMEC

When I went Microsquirt aftermarket ECU, I separated the engine harness (everything from the LM/PM to run the engine) from the body harness (everything else) in the engine bay using the guide. After label every piece of wire, I got ride off all the engine harness and put in the Microsquirt and spiced it the body harness where it needed (fan relay, a/c cut out relay, fuel pump relay, etc).

So, if Dr. Johny Dodge's method doesn't work, you have a plan b.

Using a turbo K harness would be ideal but then I’d have to try and find one.

So the k cars had a bulkhead connector at the firewall even in 88 and the Daytona had the connector under the dash. If I got a turbo SMEC harness from a K car that plugs into the 86 bulkhead, what happens to the wiring going to the kick panel for the LM? It’s got to be part of the harness on the inside part of the bulkhead no?

I considered MegaSquirt, but It would be kind of starting over. Currently I have a built 88 Omni TII with a FWD stage 5 cal that is my reliable daily but it’s is rotting away. I picked up a solid rust free 86 k wagon and am planning a swap using what I have already. Eventually MegaSquirt would be ideal but it’s just not in the budget at the moment.

no.

the LM/PM cars had a separate firewall pierce point for the LM bundle to pass through.

part of the "engine harness" ...

this is one way,
but unless yur saving the 86 engine harness,
(IMO) easiest simplest way would be to graft the bulkhead side connector from the 86 harness onto the 88 harness

LOL ..- no

wiring going to the LM IS the engine compartment harness
it enters the car at the lower corner of the passenger side end of the firewall

you're gonna need a round grommet to fill the hole there afterwards if you found an 88 turbo K harness

NONE of the LM wiring goes through the bulkhead connector ..NONE

Re: 86 LM to 88 SMEC

Man, this swap would be so much easier if you were ok with the LM/PM system. Any particular reason for the upgrade? A lot more '85-'87 K/E turbo cars to grab a harness from than '88.

Re: 86 LM to 88 SMEC

I know two folk who removed the logic board from the SMEC and placed it with 60 way under the right kick panel. The power board of the SMEC remained inside the case and was placed in the usual place behind the battery. IIRC, the injector logic changed in the SMEC.

Re: 86 LM to 88 SMEC

BINGO!!

This is the way to go as the SMEC Engine bay harness is self contained.

Forget about the LM and its wiring and join the 88 harness to the 86 "pigtail"

Chop / splice and you're running, trim excess Daytona wiring for lights etc.

Do a nice job of splicing and never look back!!

Thanks
Randy
