No offense to you or the others who run it, but I'll take the advice of an old Mopar trans guy over a handful of guys who changed their fluid with good results. It's quite possible the results everyone is having are simply due to changing the fluid, not so much the type of fluid.
DSM guys use farm and fleet hydraulic oil in their autos, has anyone experimented with that? Plenty of high-horsepower applications where its used and gives no issue whatsoever. That's all ATF is, dyed hydraulic fluid.

I will say there is no way Type F will shorten a 3 speed trans life.

Just the opposite, I've brought many soggy units back to satisfaction.

You may or may not have had other issues but you are the first to think so.

I'm a chronic experimenter and have had nothing but positive experience with type F.

Not just me, racers of many kinds agree positively with type F in 3 speeds.

Thanks

Re: Best Tranny fluid for 3 speed auto?

+ fluids required in Chrysler non 3 speeds isn't better than any other fluid.

Its required as it maintains a steady viscosity over varying temperatures.

Constant viscosity is required due to the way the "computer" calculates fluid travel.

Another fluid could be fine at a given steady temperature but temperature varies.

Most fluids are thicker when cold and thinner when hot.

Type F is the "go to" fluid for non electronic trans if one desires a firm trans.

If one desires a soft or soggy trans use something other than type F

Thanks

After talking with an old Chrysler transmission guy years ago, he says anything other than ATF+3/ATF+4 will severely shorten your trans life. This means no "compatible" fluids, etc.

He also said thanks to the small fluid capacity, changing the fluid every 15-30k is your best bet if you want your trans to last.

Stop and think about it, the trans pan on these hold less fluid than your engine holds oil, what makes you think you can run 50-100k on trans fluid, but you have to change your oil every 3-10k?

Re: Best Tranny fluid for 3 speed auto?

All Chrysler Automatic Transmissions now use ATF+4.

If you are in a pinch standard Dexron can be used.

Best Tranny fluid for 3 speed auto?

Got this STP ATF+4 for refill after new filter is installed. Is there a better fluid for our auto 3spd 413 transmissions?
