1989 Shelby Daytona

Hi! I bought a new 1987 Shelby Z and traded it in 1989 for a new Shelby. Unfortunately it met it's demise 3 months later w/ less than 3k miles due to a drunk driver.

I've recently thought of buying another one as a "toy' and actually found one only a few miles away, just like my '89 Shelby only in red [mine was blue]. It's got the T-Bar roof which mine had and a definite requirement.

This car has been sitting for a year due to a bad shift or clutch cable. he describes it as the clutch pedal barely has enough function to drive. It had a new head installed just before it was parked which is clearly evident. It's owned by a man in his mid 60's and he bought it from the original owner [I'll get to that in a minute] about 7 years ago. It's a southern car, no rust but the original paint is poor. Mileage is 175,000 but as I said, head work was done just before sitting. I charged the dead battery and did get it to start by spraying starting fluid [it started instantly] but it will not run on it's own. There's no fuel pump buzz when I turn the key on and several gauges don't seem to work. I'm thinking it's a bad ASD [auto shut down] relay?????

The history is this ~ It was bought new by, and the owners manuals filled out to; Getrag gears in NC. The current owner bought it from them and feels this is a significant attribute. I know the name and their relationship to the car but don't know if any modifications were done or it's significance.

He wants it to go to a Shelby enthusiast as he's not going to do anything with it.

What's a fair price considering it's current state? Is the Getrag relationship anything pertinent?

Hey that car you were talking bout. Is it still around? What happened to it? It should be worth about $1500 the way you described it at the most. I would have offered him $1000 for it. It will take about 3,000 to get it clean and running good and looking normal.
It's still sitting over there ~ I pass by it every other day.

Long story short ~ he wanted $1500. I offered $700 and explained my reasoning ~ he took offense. I stopped back to offer $850 and to discuss further [would have went a $1000] ~ he wasn't home so I left a note to call me. He hasn't called and I haven't bothered again.

He's difficult for sure and it will probably rot right where it sits :(
So go give him the $1500 or offer $1300. These cars are worth more than that parted out in pieces.... I loved my 89 Daytona Shelby over my 2 - 87 Shelby Z cars and my 1 88 shelby z. I sold the 03 corvette lat year and I still get more attention with the Daytona with the tops off than I did with the vette or my Shelby GT350H.

Go buy the thing and save it....It needs a good home... Or tell me where it is and I will go get it.

definately buy it for $1200-1500,if you don`t let me know and I`ll come get it this weekend.
worth it!
GLHSHELBY ~ Sorry for the delay, I don't check this e-mail often. I can stop by and get his # again then forward it to you. It's still there and its not going anywhere anytime.

sounds good. Thanks
I've been by there several times in the past 2 weeks at different times of the day and no one is around. I left a note over a week ago and it was still on the door this morning. I don't know what's going on?? The Shelby is still just sitting in the driveway.
Sounds like he got frustrated with low-ballers and has decided he'd rather just let it rot in his driveway than give it away. I've seen it happen:(.
Shew, time flies! It's been a year and a half and its still sitting right where it was when I posted this thread. Time has taken its toll and he's never called and never seems to be home when I've stopped by [I know which car he drives]. I have spoken to his wife [just last week most recently] and she always says it has to go soon but he never calls. She said if she had the title she'd sign it over to me and just give me the car. I would never do that and would pay a fair price, all things considered but.... I know everyones opinions concerning price but the car was not worth $1000 then and certainly is not now.

I've got the "itch" again for a MOPAR project so I began pursuing the Shelby and looking at other possibilities.

I did find a 1992 LeBaron convertible with the 3.0 and 5 speed manual transmission [rare] that I was considering until I saw the rust underneath it.

Anyway, I tried replying before but I had forgotten my user ID & password. When I tried tonight I somehow remembered them and decided to post.

I haven't seen the Shelby there for a few weeks and thought maybe he put it in the garage but after stopping by the wife said he junked the car..................
Go to the Junkyard and grab it before they smash it, even if just for the goldmine of parts is all that can be saved
