2-5 psi max boost?

854 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  OmniGuy123
I have just built a new 2.5 Turbo engine with a FME2 turbo .63 A/R exhaust housing. My problem seems to be that the most boost im able to push at full throttle in any gear is about 2-5 pounds.. most times all i see is 0psi. Engine pulls 19 inches of vacuum at idle. i have the wastegate actuator adjusted as short as possible and have even disconnected the hose from the actuator and no difference.

Could a leak to atmosphere in the induction system after the turbo cause this condition? I have no idle problems at all.

Any ideas are appreciated.. im lost.

I assume that you double checked to make sure that the WG arm is still attached to the flapper. It would take a pretty large leak in the IC piping for you not to get any boost out of the turbo, but I guess it could happen. Pressure test it if you can. Check out the pictures of the testers that I made here http://www.turbododge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78629&highlight=pressure+testing

They revealed a couple small leaks in my system that I did not know about.
I am actually bypassing the intercooler right now for that very reason. I am running the turbo straight into the TB with one hose, to eliminate the chance of leakage. As for the WG actuator. I had it off last nite to adjust it in and i definately reinstalled it on the flap valve.

Thanks
Well if it runs alright, then it should not be any crazy timing issue. since you obviously dont have an IC leak that is ruled out. brand new turbo that is not blowing smoke.

You said that the WG arm is adjusted as short as it will go. could it be possible that the arm is inherently too long even at the shortest setting? If you have acess to another WGA, I would try to slip it on and give her a go.
I just talked to FM and they had said that the WG can arm may need to be cut shorter to allow more adjustment inwards. I will try that and let u know.

ive had the same type of issue.. i had cut the power to the computer, and it took the smec 60 or so kms [40miles] before it gave me 12 psi..

I cut the wastegate actuator arm to allow me to adjust it even tighter. gained maybe 2-3 more pounds.. max.. still note getting anything more than 5psi. I have an original cat on there rite now that rattling.. Do you think its possible that its blocked up inside and the backpressure is so excessive in the exhaust that its keeping the turbo from spooling up? Any suggestions here guys.. i just want my car to have boost again!

I would try to wire the WG flapper closed. so that you know for sure that it is the WG or not. I guess it could be the cat, but every time I have heard of that happening the car ran like crap pretty much all the time.

You already answered your own question. The cat internals are loose and causing the backpressure which is giving you little or no boost. Drop the DP and go for a drive. Becareful as you might hit 14 psi or so!
Just wanted to let you guys no i cut out the cat and sure enough it was all clogged up inside. Massive overboost from the car now. Going to readjust the wastegate actuator longer and see if i can get the boost down. Thanks for everyones advice.

Glad to see that you figured it out.
