If I were you, I would use the 525, it is a direct drop in for your car and it will hold up great with that 2.2 carbed car. And the only time you would have to swap axleshafts is more towards the turbo side of the equation. But the 525 would be like the 4 speed you have in the car, except with an Over-Drive gear, and it has some decent power even in that gear. The one thing I would suggest you do when you are in there is upgrading to the heim joint setup. I am a big supporter of it because it stiffens up the shifting a lot and gets rid of the slushy feel of the rod style shifters (the ones that are in out L-Body cars).
