My digital speedometer reads zero and the speed sensor is NOT located at the transaxle but is midway on the speed cable between the trans and the cruise servo. Can it be replaced with a trans mounted new hall effect sensor?

How do you know the issue is with the speed sensor and not a cable or another electrical issue in the circuit?

I am not certain yet but I was wanting to know if newer sensors are direct replacement. I understand the 84’s had glass magnetic reed switches and were prone to failure. I will do more checking before I order anything.

The location for the VSS was changed in 85 to the transaxle, however...
All vehicles used a cable driven speedometer (which you want to eliminate) until 1988 when certain vehicles used an all electronic VSS.

Will it fit/work???

1984 VSS

1988/89 VSS

Before attempting this why not connect an ohmmeter to the VSS connector terminals, spin the VSS and see if you go on/off, on/off, on/off, if it does go on/off (open/closed) the VSS is fine and your issue is with the transaxle, cable, wiring or cluster.
IMO, If it is the VSS buy a replacement and be done with it.

I have the instructions for "Electronic Cluster Self Test" for 85/86, same for 84???
If you would like them let me know.

I'm pretty sure it can be, however is the provision in your transmission? 84 is such an odd duck!

Thanks. I have the digital dash not the analog gages. Since the sensor is up near the master cyl in the cable that is also where the connector comes out of the harness so I would just need to lengthen the wires to reach the transaxle.
I was not certain if any adapters were required at the transaxle or to connect to the cable that goes on to the cruise servo.
I have another 84 with the analog speed gage which I thought would be different. Turns out it looks identical so I plane to test the suspect one as you described and perhaps swap them if it tests bad.

The analog cluster still has a speed sensor because the ECU needs that data as well..
