My 86 GLH-T has a VERY loud/whining fuel pump that's going to get replaced here soon, and since the gas gauge doesn't work (and yea, I know the sending units aren't available any more) my mechanic was going to look into the possability of repairing mine. He did ask if I could find out the following. Does the entire tank have to be removed to pull the sending unit and pump? Any info and tips are appreciated.

Thanks!

If the gas filler tube isn't in the way, you can remove the lock ring holding the pump/sending unit assembly and slide it out.
If you do this, make sure you use a non-metallic or brass punch and mallet.
These won't cause sparking.
