the rotten egg sound like a CAT problem
Actually the sulfur smell is the cat overworking to clean up the overly rich mixture, may not be permanently damaged yet.
Sounds like you have a vacuum issue to the Map Sensor creating the overly rich mixture.
The cat seems fine, no hairdryer sound or of that sort. Back pressure was at 1psi at around 2000rpm. but i am getting fault code 14 MAP sensor voltage below .16V or over 4.96V
Rotten egg smell for me once was a bad battery... may want to check it out. Poor MAP sensor will make it run like arse
maybe a moisture isue IN the map sensor -re cr wash .

do you have one to try or one you can borrow to try

Mazdas used to have nice enclosed vac bleed vent caps way better than cryco
round rubber 2 piece case foam inside can take appart to clean or replace foam
look pretty cool to.
have had some isuues with wet salty map sens -not good !
Another thought

-if you dont have a spare map sens try taking yours out and leave it in a hot sunny spot for a few hours see if it runs after toasting a while .

k i'll try that and hoping it works. i dont have a spare one, unless i get a new one.:thumb:
If there is one of those square foam things on it rip it off first -then let it toast

if it runs go look 4 late 80 s mazda -look for there vac solinoids to find caps I told u abt.and dont forget you will want more than 1

No vents on a Map Sensor, only the solenoids such as Baro.
Your "running rich/rotten egg smell" is all related to your Map Issue/Code 14.

What is your Map Output Voltage reading with key on/engine off?
Do not assume your issue is with the sensor itself, wiring is also part of the circuit....
Diagnose The Problem!!!
^ Thanks for correction

I still think its moisture --if you can chk voltage great -do it

But I still rec trying to dry stuff out -Somthing either happened -at car wash OR because of car wash

Have had parts collect water inside even though they never got wet on the outside

especially when washing car

Also is there any hint of water at the smec conectors

Water in vac system will cause a vacume issue dont just look for a vac leak

IN regards to what naj stated correct no vent on map but there is one on the barro (?) solinoid right where the hose to the map conects the two

And for what its worth I only once in 12 - 13 years & 5 dif TDs had a prob with 1 wire -once .

and it was a guy much like naj ( I presume ) who found it for me to the tune of abt $800

wish this site was here back in the hard old days
