On my 89 shadow there is a spring that pushes the pedal so it is oriented verticaly. You can press the top of it Down until it hits the support bar. It shouldn’t be that important as long as the pedal doesn’t hit anything on its full travel. If it dose I would connect the top of the pedal to the support bar to avoid a stuck pedal.
