My mechanic is telling me I need a gear shift tube for my 1986 Dodge Shelby Charger. They don't make the part anymore. Any idea of where I could find this or have one cutom made. Reverse, first and second are all thrid gear.

Any other ideas? Maybe even a similiar car has the same part?

Thanks

The plastic ends on the shift rods are subject to breaking. They can easily be replaced with a heim joint setup. There are l-body/GLH(s) heim kits on eBay right now...even a complete heim setup complete with brackets and rods last I looked yesterday. One of the site supporters also offers a rod shift kit for l-bodies.

In response to your question, all manual cars from 84-86 used the 525 manual transmission, you could source parts from one, but it would be easier to just swap trannies.

87 the l-body kept the 525 manual, and I believe it was kept until 90 when Omni production was halted, not sure on this bit of info though.

You can always convert the car to shift cables and a "better" transmission, as the 525 isn't touted as the strongest one for our cars (though a few people have ran them with great sucess)

I ordered all the shifter parts from chrysler about 2 years ago. If you check your dealer, they can do a parts search nationwide and check warehouses. I know I got 2 sets back then to make sure I wouldn't have the rod shifter issues again.
Worst case scenerio, make a parts wanted ad the for rod shifter stuff used (OR possibly still new for those who have hoarded parts) and you can either go with that or convert it over the Heim joint set up which was described earlier. The nice thing about the heim joints is you will not have problem again.
