GLHS - code 47 (power loss light) - die on highway

Check of fault codes showed a 47. Called wife on phone and she tells me via manual that 47 is battery voltage too low (minimopar shows it as "charging system voltage too low"). How could that possibly make the engine die? The elec. system was perfectly fine. It would crank upon start attempt, engine light on, power loss on, interior dome lamp on.

Get towed to gas station. Check for spark. None. Take distributor cover off and I see the black "bottle connector" down there almost apart. Slide back together and we're back to normal. Now, on the distributor there's a black AND a grey bottle connector. I've had the grey one come undone on a previous car but that showed a 54 code. So, it seems the grey one is synch (i.e. like the crankshaft position sensor to find TDC of cyl #1?) and the black must be the reference to get the high-voltage coil to the distributor?

It seems the 47 code was simply erroneous and a weird byproduct of this?

Posted as simply an FYI as problem has been solved.

Hey Jim,

Not sure why that would trigger a code 47, but it sounds like you've got it fixed. The two connectors for the distributor are both sync's for the computer, one is for fuel injector sync (pretty sure the grey one) and the other for spark (the black one). Like you suspected they tell the computer the position of the crank.

Glad to see you've still got the GLHS, maybe I can coax you to bring it out to an SDAC Chicago meeting one of these days?
If I were to venture a guess, I would say that the code 47 was not related to the loss of the HEP signal at all. It takes a while to set that code. I would reset your computer to clear the code and then check your codes periodically. You wouldn't want the alternator to croak on you on the way down to SDAC! :)
Code 47 disappeared as soon as the black dist. connector was reconnected. IOW, no lingering 47 code at all. After seeing what code 47 was, I surmised that it was completely unrelated AND possibly "erroneously" reported by the LM.

It's up to 21,000 miles. I STILL haven't gotten around to replacing the left front Koni and was going to see if you wanted to earn some extra cash by allowing me to drive over to your place and spank it out. Because I've never done one and it seems there are either tricks or special tools (and the re-alignment issue after reinstall), and you've got a wealth of experience, it was on the list of things to do.

I also need to do the headliner.

headliner

bought mine here... i upgraded to the 3m tack. its well worth it. it holds it up much better and longer than that stickit stuff.

http://www.autoheadliner.com/main.html

looks killer and the headliner material is very good. its got a nice layer of foam under it. i just used the old one as a template.. cut it out... sprayed the 3m on.. waited a sec and layed it all out. took me about 2 hours frtom start to finish then i let the glue set overnight.

was a big deal to me that headliner saggin drove me NUTZ.

dealership wanted like 150$ for a new one. now i think they are ns1.
