Having a scanner is a good plan but you will not recieve real time data, the refresh rate of the scanner and controller is too slow.
Just had my Son's Snap On scanner hooked up the other day and the refresh rate was about once every 1 1/4 seconds.
If you can find an old DRB 2 with all the cables that is what I would go for, then you can also access the Bus connector and test BCM, SRS, ABS etc, an aftermarket scanner will only give you powertrain management.
Second choice would be an OTC Monitor 4000.
Check eBay.
