help with turbo not spooling correctly

My turbo does not spool correctly. At around 3 psi I here a grinding noise and the engine bogs down. It was rebuild less than 1K miles ago. I did discover an exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the turbo flange. Will that cause this type of problem or is my turbo shot? It's a Garrett.

Thanks in advance

i'd take your intake hose off and check to see if the compressor wheel spins freely also check for play in the shaft to see if it is excessive if it doesnt spin freely or has excessive play in the shaft i'd say it needs to be rebuilt but if it spins freely and the turbine shaft doesnt have alot of play check your boost controller arm ive had it before were the e-clip came off and the arm poped off leaveing the waist gate wide open witch will cause it to not build boost or very little
I got if from onerippinturbo2 who is a user on this web site. Does great work.
I ordered 2000 deg. Gasket maker. I will see if that helps.

any shaft play in the turbine shaft dennis? any oil consumption?
have not pulled the turbo as of yet. No extra oil consumption. Will an exhaust leek between the exhaust manifold and the turbo flange cause this problem?

well an exhaust leak there will cause a noise thats for sure, did you pull the intake hose off the compressor housing and check for play before you pull the whole turbo off? did it work fine before and all the sudden have an exhaust leak and low boost? how loud is the exhaust leak?
I worked GREAT before the exhaust leak. In the morning I will check for shaft play and get back with you. Thanks in advance

no problem dennis. always glad to help a stand up guy like yourself.
Thanks, Dennis
Great news, NO shaft play!
that is great news. does the wheel spin freely as well? no noises when spinning the wheel either?
No noise or interference. I'm hoping the 2,000 degree gasket maker will solve the issue. The top bolts where it mates to the exhaust manifold are a [email protected] to remove.

yeah i've tried this method, your hosed sadly. Too much pressure in there
Rob I don't know if the matters, but I was only running 7 psi of boost.

I really can't see any amount of exhaust leak around the flange causing your boost to be low. Short of a huge hole you should get boost, if the exhaust is leaking badly I'd expect the boost to come on late but still be there. To me it sounds like a boost leak. Do you have a BOV leaking? Did you check all of your hoses? Verify the actuator is connected.
