Hey guys,

Hopefully this video will help shed some light on how to set preload and endplay for your new LSD you may be installing into a transmission. In this video, I installed an OBX LSD into the A520. From what I understand, the basics of how to set the preload and end play of a FWD differential is basically the same. If you are going to attempt to do this, it is NOT as hard as it seems.

Preload for Differential bearings = gauging shim thickness PLUS end play PLUS (constant) preload of 0.254mm (.010 inch) Preload is a constant pressure on the bearing, you do not want end-play on the diff bearings, if so the transmission will whine at speed and feel sloppy when torque goes from + to -. You want pre-load which is negative end play in other words.

End play for the input shaft = gauging shim PLUS end play, MINUS (constant) end play of 0.051mm (.002 inch)

This comes straight from the 89 factory shop manual.

Time for a new preload/end play video.

As mentioned, you need final preload, not end play !!

I have a bearing cup with a slightly ground down O/D for checking.

Also, I check without the diff. cover attached.

Thanks
Randy
