my rack & pinion on my 1989 Chrysler lebaron seal where the steering shaft goes into it is leaking so I bought a new rack from advance auto do I have to drop the front crossmember? can I put it on jackstands the shop I could have used a lift closed up so ill be doing it in my driveway,,,

You dont HAVE to drop the cross member but many will say it sure does make the job a LOT easier. You really only need to loosen the rear bolts several turns, the remove the front bolts so that it drops down a bit. That gives you easier access to the PS lines and the rack bolts which can be difficult to easily access with the rack and k-frame still bolted in the car. Once you get the 4 bolts out that hold it down, and the lines off, and the tie rods off, it slides out either side of the car through the wheel well opening. I find it easier to slide it out the passenger side but either side works.
