My new toy had a hard life! What happened?

Bought a '91 Daytona Iroc Tuesday off Craigslist in Broken Arrow, OK. It's a 2.5 turbo/5spd that hasn't run in a few years. Going through my usual checks, I find the cam timing way off and fix that. Then it still won't fire and still sounds like it has no compression. Did a compression test and only #2 has compression! Fill cylinder #1 with air and it almost blows the radiator cap off! Fill #3 and the air is coming out of #4. Pull the head and find this carnage!

Did #3 go lean and cause the damage to the head?

That is one nasty chunk missing there! How would that happen?! Dear Lord!
it went lean for sure also detonated. i wouldnt stop there dragmaster, i'd pull the pan and pistons for a look, at least you will get a good look at the bottom end that way and you will know for sure that the pistons are good and not broke.
Settle down guys, let's not be so negative! Let's try and be a little optimistic please! haha :p
previous owner must of been running magma for fuel

Ok, compared to the rest of the head, that's a really small piece that's missing lol
if the casting isn't cracked it can be welded. it looks to me the head gasket was blown and driven that way for a while. the flame travel would have burned thru the aluminum can made that missing piece.

That's the spirit!:thumb:

I hadn't thought about that. Was just gonna strip it and throw it away. Already pulled another head off a bad bottom end motor I have. Gonna toss it on there and see what happens!:fingersx:
why waste the time? pull the pan and at least the pistons to check them for ring land breakage, unless you dont mind throwing out good haedgaskets while gambling with an unknown bottom end.

Because I believe in the durability of Chrysler products!:p Seriously though, here's my reasoning:

$20 headbolts and $15 006 headgasket(bought 7 of them from Mancini racing because of the price!). $35 should get me to the point where I can start the car. Then, regardless of how it runs, I can check out everthing else in the car to determine where I go next with it.

If there are other big problems, and the motor is weak, then it'll get put aside and I'll get back on what I was doing before I made the mistake of getting on Craigslist again!:D

I would hate to overhaul the engine then find out the trans is junk!
i see your point, i'm sure you could see mine as well, i'd hate to spend the time cobbling it together just to verify the trans is ok only to find out that i gotta pull the head back off because it still has low/no compression from broken up pistons/rings. really it couldn't /wouldnt hurt to pull the pan and knock the rods out of it, if the pistons are ok, just hone and re-ring it, then you know what you have on the engine side of under the hood regardless of what the tranny is like after and how cheap headgaskets are, why waste one of them not to mention the time? you can never get back the time you waste.
