Oil pressure sending unit compatibility

For context I’m using a newer style oil pressure sender with my ‘84 Daytona instrument cluster. My oil pressure will be good on startup and driving around town will be fine for a while, until I’m at a stop light and my oil pressure drops all the way below 0 and the light comes on. When I let off the brake and drive it shoots right back up and the oil light goes away. If I put it in park the pressure is back to normal due to no load on the engine at idle. Just wondering if it’s my sending unit, or I should switch back to the old style where they are separate or something more (never had this issue with the old style sending unit). I’ll have to put an aftermarket gauge on just to be sure as well.

Yes go back to the original oil sender. Preferably a Mopar one. I have seen issues with the aftermarket.
Also use a mechanical gauge as a test for accuracy.

I'd have to dig em out but there's at least 3 different ones does the metal can for the gauge the cylindrical plastic one for the newer style gauge and then there's the tiny plastic 1 for the switch.
Yes I used to have the metal cylinder and switch when I had my old electronics, when I switched over to 89+ I use the plastic one however I just changed that one out for another newer style I had laying around and now it reads 90psi and 50 at idle according to my gauge cluster so Idk what’s wrong with these senders lol

I think they are different because in my 88 Town & Country wagon I have the can and the switch for the light and for the gauge but the newer cylindrical censor is supposed to do both at the same time so maybe something's not compatible.

Your best bet is to thread in a actual oil pressure gauge and see what's really going on.

These guys had the same issue you're having and it turned out to be the gauge was bad.

Depending on the year/engine, the resistance in the sending units will be different, you need the sending unit for the year gauge you are using or you have to find a newer sender that has the same resistance as your 84.
Unfortunately, none of the sites list the resistance of the sending unit.
According to research, there are only three sending units that were used by Chrysler from 84-93 for vehicles with a gauge.
Here are the SMP part numbers, maybe SMP can supply you with the resistance specs.
84 - 88 TBI and Turbo W/Gauge - PS205
89 - 93 TBI W/Gauge - PS 231
89 - 93 Turbo W/Gauge - PS232


The newer units are two wire.
The GY/YL wire is for the gauge
The GY wire is for the low oil pressure warning light.

Your 84 also uses a GY/YL wire from the sending unit to the gauge and it runs through the BH Connector Cavity 40.

Ill just go back to the old style by cutting off the new style connector and doing each wire to the separate sender for the gauge and switch for the light. Thanks!
