Radio Issue

Hi, I have an Infinity am/fm (see pic). Was playing fine, then got nothing but static, then not even static, just dead air. It started playing again a few mins later, but went out, not even static. Also, the display screen just made some goofy, random images when I tried it again today. Connectors going into it and antenna are good. Any idea what's going on?

I would check if there are any breaks in the antenna cable between the antenna and radio.
Also, check inside the radio for a break where the antenna jack connects to the radio's circuit board.
Good continuity from the tip of the antenna to the cable end, as well as to the circuit board. No broken connections. Plus I should at least hear static all the time if it's an antenna problem. Most of the time now, it's just dead air.
Try the cassette deck and make sure it's not a problem with the preamp or amplifier stage of the radio.
Does it happen in both AM and FM?
Check for continuity between the fender and the ground of the antenna.
Check for continuity between the + of the antenna and the fender ( a short here would cause no reception).
Yes, happens on both am and fm. Tried a tape. Played ok for a bit, then the sound started breaking up. I went back to radio, got sound but lot of static, then no sound at all.
Old school suggestion, tap on it with it playing either radio or tape and see if the problem appears or disappears. That would indicate an internal problem.

One other item, Chrysler used a ground strap similar to the underhood ones from the radio case (hole or stud on the back) to the dash frame. if it isn't there, the only ground is through the antenna cable shield.

Was on another site and someone there knew a Chrysler mechanic who said 30 yrs ago that this car is not wired for this radio and would eventually quit. Same connectors in the back. If true, wondering what the difference is that would cause it to fail.

That's a very good point to make.
If it's the flat braided ground strap I'm thinking of, that could definitely be the problem.
Got a good ground, has good continuity to the radio. I think the unit is toast.
