Ok just completed this swap and wanted to update incase anyone else was looking at doing it.
Most obvious is the 87-88 lights are two piece while the 89-up are one.
The inner stud closest to the license plate was move about an inch or so over so you have to drill a hole for it. No apparent reason why they moved it.
Now the hard part...the passenger side light houses the hole for the trunk lock. This will not just bolt onto the 87-88 cars. It required major dremel modification to the 89 tail light housing to fit. Once it fits your trunk lock will not be 100% flush with the housing. Not noticeable unless your bending over and starring at it.
Over all I think the 89 tail lights look much better and happy with how it turned out. My original tail lights are tucked safely away if I ever want to swap back.
The first two pics are from the day I brought it home. Got it for FREE from the original owner due to a failing headgasket. The next few we're from 5yrs later after it had been totally transformed. Makes me sad to think that I ended up parting the car out...
currently do a full restoration on my 86 glhs. the side mirror glass is loose. is there anyway to adust the cables to take up some of the slack? also should there be 2 rubber feet inside the holes of the housing? thanks in advance.
