Hey all,

Car is a 85 omni glh turbo.

Speedo needle started going all over the place on the highway one day, then went to zero and has been there since. Odometer doesn't work either.

Speed sensor was replaced about 6 months due to an unrelated issue, and speedo cable was replaced a couple years ago. Cable is still connected to sensor and cluster.

I'm not getting any error codes other than 33 and 55 which are normal.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks!
Jack

Disconnect the cable from the VSS and speedometer and spin the cable, does it spin on both ends?
If no, replace the cable.
If yes, remove the VSS and spin the gear does the speedo cable joint move?
If no, replace the VSS.
If yes, replace/repair the speedometer.

Officer: I pulled you over for doing 90 on a 55.
You: I had no idea. My speedo says 0.

Sounds good to me lol

Well officer, it only goes up to 85 so I would not even know if I was doing 86 or 106.

Looks like the speed sensor is stripped round where the speedo cable goes in. I will have to replace it.

Seems weird that it would strip out in just a few months of occasional use.

Thanks,
Jack

Was the speedo operating normally before the failure.
Was the screwed straight on and fully seated in the sensor.

It operated fine for a couple months. I'm thinking the cable may not have been fully screwed onto the sensor.
