Entered my 86 SC in the NHRA Sport Compact series race, in the Quick-16 class, when the series made it's stop in Atco NJ this past weekend.

The NHRA Quick-16 class is interesting. Unlike regular bracket dial in classes, you need to qualify 11.99 or better and only the fastest 16 quaifiers get to race in eliminations. Also unlike regular bracket racing, your dial in is automatically set by your fastest qualification run. You are also allowed to break out by 1/2 second beyond your best qualifying time. Each time you run a better time than your qualifying time, it automatically becomes your new dial-in. This field included 8, 9, 10 and 11 second cars.

Although I had problems with my first 2 qualifying runs (1st run I blew my fuel hose off again, 2nd run I had my boost set too low), With my back to the wall to qualify, I let everything fly and managed an 11.560 @ 112.50 to qualify. The track was hooking so I also got my best street tire 60ft time of 1.757 on the qualifying run and I was on the brake at the end because this is a daily driver with no cage.

With some luck, I made it to the finals. It was a pretty cool feeling to be one of the pairs of finalists in the staging lanes lined up next to 2000HP sport compacts. In the finals my dial was 11.56 against an air cooled VW that was dialed in at 11.27. My previous run, I launched soft and got 1.84 60 foot so I, did a really smokey burnout and launched harder in the final run. This was a mistake because I broke the beams 22 thousands of a second early :( and my final run of 11.564 @ 119.39 with another 1.7 60ft was a for nothing.

The NHRA web site unfortunately does not appear to have the Quick-16 in their recap results. I emailed the NHRA sport compact people and called the Executive Director, of the NHRA Sport Compact Series. At this point, I can only assume it was an oversight.

This was a nationally televised event and it will air on ESPN2 Friday, May 27 at 4PM and again on Sunday, May 29 at 2AM. Even though I redlighted in the final, I hope they show the final pass in the Quick-16 class.

This event should also have videos on many sport compact web pages, so I will let you know if I see any.

Carl

Yes, he has an auto. And most of the time if set up right (converter, shift points and quality, etc.) will out ET a manual trans in our cars. Now, some type of sequential manual trans will out do an auto. But those are BIG BUCKS. I just recently dropped .77 in ET in the 1/8th after switching to an auto, with more to come after I fix the detonation problem in high gear I was having.
glad to see you made it to the finals. very nice 60'. did racersteve make it there.

Here are the time slips so you can compare the 5spd to auto.

This is the qualifying one. The traps speed is low because I was on the brake. This would have trapped between 118-120. I'm on left.

This is the final round time slip. This is the correct trap speed. I was in it all the way however, there was some wheel spin at the launch because I had the boost too high on the launch.

Thanks guys.

Yep, Brian is right. On the street and in the first 1/8th mile, autos rule. Most autos will trap lower than 5 speeds, but with a quicker ET.
A 7.40 1/8th and 11.50's 1/4 you are the fastest in street trim I have seen!! :thumb: I hope my Charger does as good once I get through playing with the stock stuff (block, head,& turbo). The ported big valve head with ported exhaust manifold and hybrid turbo that I was using on the Daytona is worth 100+ HP over stock, but I want to see kindof how quick the stock stuff can be first. I think I can squeak out .5 to .7 more out of it.
Your car is just awesome Carl!!
thanks guys, my 1/8th mile times r 7.60,s to 7.70,s at good tracks [huntville ,ala.]. best being 7.579. i can cut 1.6,s 60' there!!!. dbltrbl your 330,s r alot better than mind!! ,my best 5.009. i think an auto will help me with that? .great job last weekend too!!!!!.right onthe dial in !!.i ran this last weekend at a nopi street event, heads up!!!,not a chance in hell there.9 second hondas!!!. mike at forward motion ,told me to put a 3.50 gear in it,and 24" tall tires, would help alot!!. he said i dont need to hit fifth in a 1/4. see,ya & good luck next time huey
Brian , I,m Going To Huntville Wed Night!!,be Coming Right Threw Woodville, You Want To Go? Let Me Know

Thanks Russ.

I finally found a picture on the NHRA web site.

This is the bug I ran against in the final. He qualified with an 11.2.

Hey, I want that!
Nice website information Carl. Keep us posted. Alot of the Grand National guys run alcohol spray, not sure why more people don't. My buddy runs 22psi. with his g.n. with pump gas.
That's awesome for a full interior and street tires. I can't beleive your 60' Ft. with street tires. That's just great. Car reminds me a lot of my charger (looks of it).

Glad to see you've got the site back up as well!

Congrats. Can't wait to see what more the car can do.

I doubt you would drop that much based off your posted time, but you could probably drop .3 in the 1/8th, with a good setup and an engine tune to work with an auto. With an auto I try and shift the power up in the rpm range, as a good torque converter will give you all the bottom end torque you will need.
The reason I dropped that much ET over a manual was I was using pure street tires with both trans. and cut .5 off the 60' alone, getting a 1.96 with the auto. I was expecting about a full second improvement but I ran into a detonation problem in high gear from the engine having over a 9.0 to 1 compression ratio with the T1 pistons and swirl head. Iam changing the head to a stock G head to get the compression down to around 8.4 to 1 along with some more exhaust work and then try and hit the 7's with a stock block, head, turbo, w/pure street tires. It's a personal challenge of mine.
