timing

crazy question when i try to time my car (86 turbo 1) with the timing lite the timing mark is jumping all over the place. i did it the right way with unplugging the coolant sensor and the cam, crank, and distributor are all correct. when i unplug the cts the mark is moving around a bit so i try to put it as close to 12 as i can. then i turn the car off plug in the cts and start it again. when i put the lite on it the mark is all over the place it goes from between 2 to 15 jumping around is this normal?

thanks

with the coolant temp sensor plugged in the timing will move that's the function of the computer. with the sensor unplugged the LOS (limited operating strategy or limp-in) mode is applied which means the engine runs on base timing, rich, open loop. so it is normal if the system is not in LOS for the the timing to be moving all over the place. but it should be fairly steady when checking fixed or base timing.
thanks

what im trying to figure out is why my engine is jumping all over th place at idle. it seems like its not running right. the way i guess i could explain it is its fighting itself, not really running smooth. the mixture on my a/f is just about perfect at idle and at wot but the car just seems not to have any power. when it boosts it goes but its like its all turbo power and the engine is slacking.
