What type of intercooler does the 87 GLHS have? Air-to-air or air-to-liquid?

Air to air.

So if there is a leak how do you refill the system?

refill the system? no its like a radiator for air. the compressed air from the turbo, goes in one side into a tank on the intercooler, then it flows through smaller tubes to the other side tank then out into your engine. take a look at your intercooler. its works just like a radiator, but for air (the air that goes into your engine)

So if I have a leak I just have to find the leak and repair it and I am good? will it hurt the car to run it with a leak in the intercooler?

yeah under vaccum it will suck air from the intercooler hole, into your engine (without filtering) under boost this will leak some of the air your turbo worked so hard to compress and heat up, and you will notice maybe a small drop in performance and boost levels.

EDIT: yeah you can probably fix the leak, as the intercooler is aluminum, or you can get a bigger intercooler. do a custom front mount. people have found that intercooler is good to around 15psi. check ebay they have some decent intercoolers for a decent price. you can probably have a FMIC for under 200 bucks with new pipes (EBAY) or you can get another stock intercooler (or 2) and have someone (unless you can weld aluminum) make you a dual or tripple core intercooler.

Thanks for the info. It is a custom intercooler with custom piping, I think the leak is at a hose a clamp on the piping. I am new to the car and that is why I have all these questions.
