On my 1987 Daytona Shelby Z, The original tires were Goodyear Gatorbacks 225/50vr/15's. Is there a tire available that performs the same as? I want to keep to the same tire size as well, Don't like whats on car now. Suggestions?

Gatorbacks are no longer made and Goodyear is overpriced.
The OE Gatorbacks handled well on flat dry pavement and did not have a long treadlife.

My car came with P205/55/VR16 Gatorbacks and I stopped using Goodyear in the 90's.
You will find a lot of tires out there that perform better than the Goodyears, last a lot longer and are a lot less money.

You do not need to stay with a "V" rated tire, that is rated up to 149 MPH and generally the higher the speed rating the lower the tread life and of course, cost more.
I switched to "H" rated tires(up to 130 MPH) and notice no difference in handling.

You will get a lot of opinions on what people like and are using, I am currently using Fusion HRI and Love them, they handle well on wet/dry roads, no noise and are wearing extremely well, also they were only $85.00 each.

Who makes the Fusion HRI tires? Where are they available? Do they have 225/50/15's? What does the tread look like? The price is attractive, and no noise is a good feature as well. I don't mind cruisin with the stereo system set for poundage but there are times a quiet drive is nice without road noise.
I have Shelby Z that didn't have a limited top speed went well past the 125 mph and climbed higher then that. The car was able to go fast enough that the stripped line went solid. That was an exprience all on it's own, I'll never forget in my life.:thumb: The twin to that car is in the cars for sale by others
My cars twin (Unlimited top speed)
I know Goodyear stopped making the Gatorbacks and they were a good tire, Sure they didn't last a long time but I have had very good luck with them and gotten away with my fair share of " situations" on the streets, if you know what I mean ( hint :tsktsk-tisk: hint )

I bought my car new and wanted to keep everything OE but the tires that replaced the Gatorback were selling for $190.00 each and the left and right side tires were different prices.
I was not paying that for a tire that did not handle well on wet surfaces and only lasted 25,000 miles.

Fusion as far as I know is made by Bridgestone but I cannot confirm that.
I just looked on line and it appears Fusion Tires do not come in P225/50/15.
Have you had the car since new?
Is that the size listed on the door tag?

We have a Tire Vendor as a TD Vendor, you can contact them and find out what is available in that size.

DISCOUNT TIRE

You can also go to tirerack.com but in that size they are only showing 2 street tires and 6 competition/drag tires.

You do not want Fuzion tires. Trust me. The get choppy really quickly and they are noisy. I hate noisy tires LOL. Look up BFgoodrich Radial i forget what trhey are. Or i think Firestone sells them in there Wide Oval series.

I have had my Fusions on my car for 3 years now and have not experienced any of the problems you listed.
I do not want to start a debate, this thread is about helping the OP choose a good overall tire for his 87 Daytona.
That being said...

Tires are only part of the steering/suspension package on your vehicle and depending on the car, valving of struts/shocks, sway bar size, responsiveness of the rack, etc all play a part in how the car handles so a tire that works on one car may not be the best for another.
As I originally stated you will get a lot of opinions on tires and ultimately the choice will be yours.

Thanks guys I've found what I'm looking for..

I have made my choice on the tires,

They seem to have the closest tread pattern and the same
speed rating as well as traction, temp rating as well as size
is correct for my car:thumb:

The Falken is what I am using on my car on 6.5 crab wheels. I am not using the 225/15 though, I am using a 215/60 (I wanted the height). The car will definitely handle better with the 50 series.

I love the look of a 225-50 on our 15" wheels. G-Force Sports are a good all around tire that actually last quite a while(without doing burn-outs)

I really wish that BFG would make the G-Force T/A KDW2s in a 225-50R15. They would go really good on my Fiberides

Unfortunately, there isn't much brand that make the 225 in the 50 series.
You may find a stikier one in the 45 series.

Truthfully, anything that's being made from a reputable brand these days will be better then the Gatorback.
Too bad the Falken Azenis RT-615 or the Kumho XS are not available in 225...the difference would have been like comparing a Vector vs a Gatorback from Goodyear.

Yup, the stance of a 225 mean business but if you choose those 2 brands(Azenis or the XS) in the 205, they are pretty wide and the grip are close to a "R-coumpound" you wouldn't notice you are running 205.

These would definately turn you into a pilot, uh-uh!!

To my taste, the Fusion one are more of a greasy tires that squeals at the limit (which is low versus the tire I described above)
Their sidewall will turn blue very easily if you like to push the car in and out the ramp.

It's pretty much always coming out the same way. How much are you willing to spend?

I just remembered that the Gatorback were replaced with the GS-C back then.
Also, I had good memories with the Dunlop D40M2, the Yokohama A-520 and a Toyo one which I can't recall.
Toyo's back then and today are still my favorite brand.

I'm running into the same problem with my 88 Shelby Z. I have Yokohama Avids and I guess they don't make them anymore. The two front ones are pretty warn and all four are showing the start of dry rot. It's between the Kumho ECSTA or Falken ZETire, unless anyone knows a better tire in my size.

I've gone with Falken 225/50/15's

As I was told these are the closest to the gatorbacks when the car was new
in handling and treadwear/temp rating is same

I wasn't happy with the Yoka's Avid tire at all. Mind you the car I bought had new ones on it and they're 205/60/15's and don't corner worth a damn because they're to narrow.Lota squeeling on on/off ramps at high speeds

I actually have Toyo Proxes 4 on my car. I just got the car 2weeks ago and have only driven about 10 miles, tore down to reset the timing and replace some minor parts after that. The seem alright on first impression, but car wasn't running great anyway (cam was off by 2-3 teeth)

if you google nos goodyear gaterback tires you may find something- a lot comes up when you do

there was also a thread here last year or the year before about a warehouse stuffed with them - specifically said there was 225 50 15's in the bunch
